A novel of the seamy underbelly of Hollywood. Players are: the Serious Novelist hoping to make a career for himself writing for the movies, the mixed-race actress looking for her big break, the producer with dreams of making the Best, the Biggest Movie Ever. Among others. Everyone wants something more out of life. Will life co-operate? That is the question. If you're thinking this is just another trashy book you'd be only half-right. Yes, it's trashy, but it's certainly nobody's Just Another. I wish more authors writing trash would do what Kastle does and give the readers fine-hewn characters who have complex motivations. Do they think it's wasted on anyone who'd want to read that type of book, so why bother? 'Cause you know, some of us are intelligent, thoughtful people who appreciate texture and depth. I promise you, truly we are.I like the way Kastle chose to tell his story. His book may be called The Movie Maker (singular), but it really is a democratic affair, where we switch to a different character every chapter, so each gets their turn in the spotlight. More character study than plot-centric action-adventure because of it. We learn what makes each person tick, how they got that way, see their Issues guiding the present, dictating actions that will shape the future. Dreams come true, dreams broken. All very Hollywood.
