The maker of priest holes, St. Nicholas Owen, is one of my favourite martyrs of England. This original DVD production tells his fascinating story in a unique and excellent way. Using a blend of historical imagery, woodcuts and paintings, merged with Sacred Art and original live portrayals, this DVD does not invade the viewers perception of the saint. Instead the portrayals are just right as the martyr himself narrates his own story in a moving and intimate way overlaying the visuals which do not use acting or lines, just original and extremely interesting portrayals of what took place. Therefore it is easy to become absorbed in the story and makes the whole style works well. Characters such as Sir Robert Cecil, John Gerard and events such as the gunpowder plot which ties into the martyrs story are just great to watch unfold. A lot of the film was shot in authentic medieval buildings and it's a joy to study the sets and trinkets around. Overall the film uses narrative, visuals, art and scenery with an original music score which is just as important as the narrative itself, to creat a truly unique atmosphere which is both absorbing and moving. The climax of the story and the martyrs capture and imprisonment and eventual death was the most moving of all. The whole production is extremely Catholic and true, filled with a Spiritual depth, always bringing in the richness of the Faith, Our Lord's Passion and insights and the thoughts of St. Nicholas Owen as he travels throughout England. This truly brings one of the little known and forgotten English Martyrs to life and is a real encounter with both history and the Cathoic Faith in England during a time of great persecution.
